- What is the difference between an on-grid and an off-grid solar system?
- On-grid systems are connected to the utility grid and use no batteries; surplus energy is sold back to the grid. Off-grid systems operate independently, storing generated energy in batteries so it can be used at night. On-grid is preferred where mains electricity exists, off-grid where it does not.
- How many years does a solar energy investment take to pay for itself?
- Payback on an on-grid system is typically between four and seven years. The figure varies with system size, consumption profile, regional irradiance values and the current electricity tariff. Savut GES provides a payback calculation specific to your project as part of the pre-installation feasibility study.
- How long do solar panels last?
- Solar panels typically have a service life of 25 to 30 years, and manufacturers generally provide a 25-year performance warranty. Inverters last between 10 and 15 years and may need replacing once over the lifetime of the system.
- How large a system can I install on my roof?
- The installable capacity depends on the usable, unshaded roof area. In practice around 5 to 6 m² is needed per kW of installed capacity, so roughly 15 to 20 kW can be fitted on 100 m² of suitable roof. The exact figure is determined after assessing roof orientation, pitch and structural condition.
- Can I sell my surplus electricity back to the grid?
- Yes. In on-grid systems any energy you generate beyond your consumption is exported to the distribution network and offset against your bill. This falls under unlicensed generation and requires an application to the distribution company; Savut GES handles the application and project approval process for you.
- Do solar energy systems require maintenance?
- Solar energy systems are low maintenance. Cleaning dust and dirt from the panels once or twice a year and periodically checking connection points and inverter performance is sufficient. Savut GES provides periodic maintenance and remote performance monitoring for the systems it installs.
- Do the systems work on cloudy days and in winter?
- Yes, solar panels generate electricity on cloudy days too, although output is lower than in clear conditions. Because panel efficiency improves at lower temperatures, yield on sunny winter days is high. Annual generation estimates account for these seasonal variations.
- Which pumps do solar irrigation systems work with?
- Solar irrigation systems are compatible with drip, sprinkler and deep-well pumps. The system is sized by calculating pump power, daily water requirement and well depth. Dedicated solar drives are used for submersible pumps.
- How many watts of panel does a caravan need?
- For basic use such as lighting, phone charging and a water pump, 200 to 400 W of panel with a suitably sized battery is generally sufficient. Where a refrigerator or continuously running appliances are involved, 400 to 600 W or more is recommended. The exact figure is calculated from a list of daily consumption.
